The Devil's Rock Garden & Highway 12

The road from Bryce to Capital Reef is Highway 12, and it's a destination in itself. It winds through beautiful scenery and other parks and side excursions, including Hole in the Wall Road, which leads to the Devil's Rock Garden. These strange formations seem to grow out of the sand, and on a hot, sunny day, it's easy to see where they get their name.

Above: some "foliage" in the Devil's Rock Garden.
It was weird to walk around these towering rocks, or clamber through and on top of them. The road here is only paved part of the way, so it's a rough ride to the Garden.

At left is apparently the Devil's phallic symbol.

Kodachrome Basin State Park

Not far from Bryce is Kodachrome Basin State Park, so named because the brilliant rock hues reminded people of the famous film The photo above is the road on the way into the park.

At left, a rock chimney.
Because the various rock strata erode differently, this vein of harder stone remained while the surrounding rock eroded away.

Anasazi State Park

In Boulder is a park and museum built around some excavated ruins of Native American dwellings. The photo at right shows the excavated foundations of a long house. Below is not the real thing, but a replica built to show the relative size and composition of the rooms.
